I finally saw Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams and it was, in many respects, an extraordinary experience. I’m drafting a post on the film and on cave art in general but in the meantime, here’s the trailer.

A personal piece from writer Craig Childs on NPR this morning about mapping remains of the Hohokam civilization lying beneath the streets, parking lots and malls of Phoenix, Arizona. As somebody equally fascinated with how history’s layers build up, I particularly liked this bit:  ”We never live in just one time. A well of history rests in the ground beneath us. And sometimes, when the light is just right, you can see through to the other side.”

On the 70th anniversary of the Lascaux Cave discovery, sixteen images with commentary from Life magazine’s Ralph Morse, the first photographer (now 93!) to go through the cave after the end of WWII. Other than the interesting behind-the-scenes photos from the Morse shoot, there are multiple, previously unpublished cave images; beautiful linework on the steer.
