My “Family Finder – Overview and Recommendations” post is at Invisible Histories and I am currently in the process of drafting a follow-up on the Family Finder results and success we’re seeing so far in the Finland Project. It should be posted by early next week.

But briefly:  Family Finder tests over 500,000 SNPS across your 22 chromosomes and shows matches anywhere from close relationships (immediate family, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th cousins) up through 5th and more distant cousins in FamilyTreeDNA’s database. Looking at the results of just 19 members, I think this test has tremendous potential for the Finland Project. Of those 19, 11 are related to at least one other project member, most of them not having known about that connection before. We are already seeing multiple, previously unknown 3rd and 4th cousin matches as well as 3 more 5th-to-distant cousin (also previously unknown) connections that have now been confirmed through the paper trail.

Since within the next week Family Finder will be made available to the general public, I strongly encourage any project members who might be interested to order it now; FamilyTreeDNA will be giving current customers first priority in test processing. Based on the enthusiastic response FTDNA has already seen during the beta launch, public demand will no doubt be high. The retail cost is $289 and you can find the order link in the left side menu of your FTDNA account page

Family Finder vertaa 22 autosomaali-kromosomia. Ne periytyvät sattumanvaraisesti kaikilta esivanhemmilta, ei vain suorista isä- ja äitilinjoista. Family Finder vertailee 500.000 kohtaa 22:sta autosomaali-kromosomista. Testi tunnistaa lähisukulaisia viidensiin serkkuihin asti, mutta vertailuun tulee mukaan myös paljon kaukaisempia kuin viidensien serkkuja niiden joukosta, jotka ovat Family Finder testin tilanneet. Autosomaalivertailu tuo nähtäväksi uudenlaisen nimilistan, jossa kunkin henkilön täsmääminen on esitetty vastaavuutta esittävällä lukemalla, mitä enemmän täsmää, sitä suurempi suhdeluku. Kaukaisempien kuin viidensien serkkujen kohdalla ei ole arviota kuinka paljon etäisyyttä arvioidaan sukupolvien määrässä. Siinä ei myöskään näy, minkälaista polkua serkuissa, sirpaleserkuissa ja sitä kaukaisemmissa pitää edetä isiä, isien äitejä, äitejä ja äitien isiä. Perimä etenee sattumanvaraisesti, toisin kuin suorissa äiti- ja isälinjoissa. Täsmäämislukeman lisäksi esitetään grafiikalla kohtaa, minkälaisissa pätkissä täsmäämistä kuhunkin henkilöön nähden esiintyy. Family Finderin tuloksia ei esitetä Suomi DNA-vertailuprojektin sivuilla, vaan ne ovat vain kullakin testiin osallistuneella itsellään.  Administraattorit Laura Hayden ja Lauri Koskinen voivat kommentoida tuloksia kullekin sähköpostitse. Family Finderin voi tilata pelkästään itselle lisätilauksena oman kit-numeron tulossivulta käsin vasemmasta reunasta. Tilaus etenee painamalla Next-nappulaa. Parhaimmillaan Family Finder on, kun tilaa sen yhtaikaa sekä itselle että henkilölle, jonka lähi- tai sirpaleserkku-sukulaisuuden haluaa varmistaa, vaikka sitä ei voi selvittää suorista isä- ja äitilinjoista. Voi joutua antamaan uudet poskenkaavintanäytteet, jos kaikki vanhat näytteet on ehkä ehditty jo avata ja käyttää aiemmissa analyyseissä. Hinta on 289 dollaria vielä muutaman päivän ajan. Testi näyttää olevan suosittu, joten tuloksia voi joutua odottamaan melko pitkäänkin.
