Join

We welcome you to join the Finland Y-DNA and mtDNA Project! Anyone who has Finnish ancestry along a males-only or females-only line may participate in DNA ancestral research by joining this project. We help members choose appropriate tests that further their goals and we publish and analyze the data so that participants may find and communicate with their Finnish DNA-relatives.

Not yet tested

The Y-DNA (Y-chromosome DNA) test is used for the direct paternal line, and the mtDNA (Mitochondria DNA) test is used for the direct maternal line. (Chart) Male participants may purchase both the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, but female participants are limited to the mtDNA test since they do not have a Y chromosome. Female participants may ask a male relative who shares a common direct paternal ancestor to participate in the study if they wish to research their own paternal line.

If you order a DNA test through the Finland project, you will receive a substantial discount. (Purchase Test Kit)

The least expensive test will provide information about your deep ancestry. For genealogical research, participants are encouraged to purchase or upgrade to either the Y-DNA 37 marker test or higher (for men) or the mtDNAPlus hi-resolution test (for both men and women). This will allow matches with more recent mutual ancestors. (Which Test?) Please write to a project administrator if you have questions about which test to order.

Current National Geographic participants

You can transfer your DNA test information to FTDNA through your Genographic Project member’s page. (Genographic Project) To do this, scroll down to the section labeled “What Else Can I Do With My Results?”, click on the the “Learn more” link, and follow the prompts from there.

Current FTDNA participants

If you are already a FTDNA participant, then go to the Finland project website and enter your kit number and password. (Join) Please record your earliest Finnish ancestor and Finland location coordinates at the Setup Preferences in FTDNA. (Coordinate Tool)

Forgot your kit number and password? In case you have difficulties finding your kit number and password, please contact: leahw@familytreedna.com. She will reply to the e-mail address that you first used to register.
